Where Carla travels by train from Izmir to Selçuk, with the goal of visiting legendary Ephesos, only to find much more than they bargained for. In the evening falls into conversation with a very learned tour guide, who gives them much good advice.

Carla discovers the original Smyrna and talks with the archaeologists working there, only to find there is an even older settlement! Later in the day a walk around the Kızlarağası Hanı bazaar, then on to the Asansör, with its panoramic views over Izmir.

Carla visits Izmir for the first time, to explore its intriguing mix of contemporary and historic architecture: the ancient Agora, the bazaar district of Kemeralti, the Konak Mosque and Clock Tower, wrapping up with a long walk along Izmir’s modern seafront and wide avenues.
